This is a totally subjective list of some of the greatest games in the history of the Cougar Football Program. Others will be added as they occur.
Year | Game | Description |
1979 Regular Season | PC 13, Radford 0 | at Pulaski County H.S., Dublin This was the first game for Coach Joel Hicks at Pulaski County and the first victory in four tries over Radford High School (the two schools wouldn't play again until 2009.) This was the beginning of what will be remembered as the first "Miracle" season for the Cougars. Hicks took the remains of a team that had won only 3 games the year before and led them to the playoffs. |
1979 Regular Season | PC 23, Martinsville 13 | at Martinsville H.S., Martinsville The Cougars scored three touchdowns in the 2nd half, overcoming a 13-2 halftime deficit to upset the Bulldogs. The game was played in a heavy rainstorm, on an extremely muddy field. |
1979 Regular Season | PC 8, Northside 7 | at Pulaski County H.S., Dublin The Cougars trailed the Vikings 7-0 for what seemed like forever. With time running out, the Cougars fumbled at the Northside 1 yard line. The Vikings then fumbled the ball back, and with a short TD pass on the next play followed by a two-point conversion, the Cougars took the lead. A Viking desperation pass was then intercepted, and the Cougars won a miracle game in the first year for Coach Hicks. The Cougars lost to Cave Spring 8-7 in strikingly similar fashion earlier in the season. |
1979 Northwest Region Semi-Final | PC 7, GW Danville 0 | at George Washington H.S., Danville The only score came in the 1st quarter, when Cougar defensive back Curtis Trail intercepted a pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. The defense took over from there to give the school its first playoff win in its first playoff appearance. |
1980 Regular Season | PC 32, Heritage 27 | at City Stadium, Lynchburg Trailing 25-27 with 30 seconds remaining, the Cougars covered 70 yards in two plays to win with no time remaining. Curtis Bland hit Blake Farlow with a 38 yard pass, and then a 32 yard pass for the winning touchdown. King Harvey rushed for 4 touchdowns in the game. |
1985 Regular Season | PC 17, Franklin County 14 | at Franklin County H.S., Rocky Mount With three minutes remaining, the Eagles went for the touchdown on 4th and goal inside the Cougars 5 yard-line. The Eagles QB ran a bootleg and safety Rodney Landreth met him in mid-air, just inches from the goal-line to preserve the victory. |
1988 Regular Season | PC 7, Bethel 6 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin Tommy Shepherd threw the game tying touchdown pass to Angelo Webb with 24 seconds remaining, and B.C. Clark kicked the PAT to give the Cougars the win over the talented Bethel Bruins from Hampton. |
1991 Regular Season | PC 31, EC Glass 28 | at City Stadium, Lynchburg With an all-new Wing-T offense, the Cougars overcame a 14-point deficit to win with a Brian Duncan field goal on the last offensive play of the game. This was the first big win for a team that won only five games the year before. The 1991 season will be remembered as the second "Miracle" season. |
1991 Regular Season | PC 24, Patrick Henry 21 | at Victory Stadium, Roanoke Again the Cougars overcame a 14-point deficit to win with a Brian Duncan field goal on the last offensive play of the game. The win clinched the outright Roanoke Valley District Championship and Coach Joel Hicks' 200th win of his career. |
1991 Northwest Region Semi-Final | PC 23, Woodbridge 20 (OT) | at Woodbridge S.H.S., Woodbridge Trailing 20-6 in the 3rd quarter to the #1 team in Virginia, on the road; the Cougars tied the game late in the 4th quarter, then won it in overtime on a Brian Duncan field goal. |
1992 Northwest Region Final | PC 25, GW Danville 6 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin The Cougars defeated a big and talented G.W. team, to win the Northwest Region Championship for the 3rd time in school history. The win also avenged losses to the Eagles in 1990 and 1991 by a combined score of 83-29. |
1992 State Semi-Final | PC 12, James Robinson 10 | at W.T. Woodson H.S., Fairfax Freshman kicker Shayne Graham kicked a short field goal with seconds left to advance the Cougars into the Group AAA Division 6 State Championship game. This was also one of the coldest, if not the coldest game in school history, with wind chills well below zero. |
1992 State Championship | PC 35, Thomas Dale 20 | at University of Richmond Stadium, Richmond A total team effort including Eric Webb's 3 TDs, 2 blocked punts, and a caused fumble, gave the school its first State Championship in any sport. |
1997 Regular Season | PC 34, Anacostia D.C. 30 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin The Cougars trailed 30-9 in the 3rd quarter, but stormed back to win. In the past, the Cougars had dominated the Indians, but the 1995 - 1997 games were won by the Cougars by a combined 12 points. |
1997 Regular Season | PC 24, Forest Hills, NC 21 (2OT) | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin At the half, the Cougars trailed 14-0 and had only 1 first down and 38 total yards of offense. The Cougars came back to tie the game in regulation, and won in the 2nd overtime. |
1997 Regular Season | PC 31, Cave Spring 28 (OT) | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin With a playoff bid on the line, the Cougars overcame a 28-7 2nd half deficit to tie the game and send it to overtime. After stopping the Knights on a 4th down fake field goal attempt, Cameron Ashworth kicked the game winning field goal. The game ended a regular season in which the Cougars overcame 4th quarter deficits to win 5 different games. The efforts displayed in this game and the victory over Patrick Henry the week before were dedicated to teammate Lee Cook, who died three weeks before on the field at Victory Stadium in Roanoke. |
1999 Regular Season | PC 35, Cave Spring 34 (OT) | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin Trailing by a TD with less than 10 minutes left, the Cougar defense held the Knights on 4th and goal from inside the one. The offense then drove 99½ yards for the game tying TD and PAT to take the game to overtime. The Cougars went first in OT, scoring a TD + PAT. Cave Spring scored a TD and lined up to kick the tying PAT. Head Coach Joel Hicks called a timeout to ice the kicker. As the Knights lined up again, Hicks called another timeout. This time Cave Spring sent their offense back on the field to go for a 2-point conversion and the win. The Knights offense was stopped short and the Cougars had won a stunner. |
2000 Northwest Region Final | PC 28, Culpeper County 20 | at Culpeper County H.S., Culpeper Pulaski County rushed for 288 yards against undefeated Culpeper's stingy defense, and Josh Bowling's interception at the 1-yard line sealed the Cougars fifth Northwest Region Championship. Josh Calfee was the workhorse carrying 30 times for 168 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The victory broke the defending Division 5 State Champion Blue Devil's 25-game winning streak. |
2004 Regular Season | PC 20, William Fleming 19 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, Dublin Trailing 19-14 with less than two minutes to play, the Cougar offense took the field at their own 21-yard line. Nine plays later the ball was on the Colonels 28 yard line with about 15 seconds remaining on the clock. Quarterback Ryan Dean dropped back and lobbed a pass into Kevin Crouse's hands near the visitor's sideline. Crouse carried the ball the last eight yards for the winning touchdown with four seconds remaining. |
2004 Regular Season | PC 21, EC Glass 20 (OT) | at City Stadium, Lynchburg After a scoreless second half, the game went into overtime with the Cougars and Hilltoppers tied 14-14. The Cougars had possession first, and Kevin Crouse took the ball in from seven yards out on third down. Luis Piscura's PAT made the score 21-14. Glass threw a touchdown pass on their second overtime play. On the Hilltoppers extra point attempt, Chad Thompson rushed around the end and blocked the kick, giving the Cougars the hard fought victory. |
2004 Regular Season | PC 21, Cave Spring 20 | at Dwight Bogle Stadium, Roanoke County Kevin Crouse scored from 16 yards out and Luis Piscura kicked the PAT to give the Cougars a 21-20 lead with 6:33 remaining in the game. But the Knights weren't ready to give up. They methodically drove the ball down to the 16 yard line, calling a time out to stop the clock at four seconds. After two "icing" timeouts by the Cougars, the Cave Spring kicker missed the 23-yard field goal wide right. This was the third one-point victory of the 2004 season; the most in a season in Pulaski County High School history. |
2005 Regular Season | PC 44, Franklin County 41 (OT) | at Franklin County High School, Rocky Mount Desperate to avoid the first 0-3 start since 1975, the Cougars overcame a 14-point deficit in the 4th quarter, winning the game in overtime on a Luis Piscura field goal. The Cougar defense gave up 31 points in the first half, but stepped it up and allowed only seven points in the final two quarters and overtime. Kevin Crouse turned in a heroic effort in his first start of the season after a pre-season injury. He tallied 276 yards on 38 carries with four touchdowns. Benji Poindexter added 112 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. |
2006 Regular Season | PC 16, Jefferson Forest 9 | at Sabre Stadium, Forest, VA Still reeling from the loss of longtime assistant coach and former Pulaski County Superintendent of Schools Mr. Ken Dobson after the previous weeks' game against Franklin County, Pulaski County managed to pull out the 16-9 victory over the Cavaliers on the strength of three field goals by senior Ben Buckland. Coach Dobson served as the kicking coach for the Cougars, and Buckland had his kick card in his helmet that night. It was the first win of the season for Pulaski County after three straight losses. |
2008 Regular Season | PC 34, Salem 24 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium/Joel Hicks Field, Dublin After falling behind in the first half, the Cougars roared back in the second half to take the lead and win the game 34-24, preserving the fourth perfect season in program history and propelling the Cougars into the playoffs. The halftime speech by Head Coach Jack Turner was legendary. He was carried onto the field by the team after the win. |
2010 Regular Season | PC 43, Patrick Henry 42 (3OT) | at Merrill Gainer Field, Roanoke After an 0-2 start in the first season under new Head Coach Todd Jones, the Cougars rallied from behind to tie the game and send it into overtime. Quarterback Chad Perry completed 13 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Wide out Zack Akers had seven catches for 11 yards and a touchdown. Chase Cook caught three for 121 yards and a touchdown, plus added an interception and a 58-yard punt in the win. "The players did this for the community," said Jones, a Pulaski County 1990 graduate. "This was for Pulaski County Pride." |
2010 Regular Season | PC 21, Salem 13 | at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium/Joel Hicks Field, Dublin Trailing and in danger of having a losing season under first-year Head Coach Todd Jones, the Cougars rallied to stun the Salem Spartans and preserve a 5-5 season, despite being under VHSL sanctions for alleged "out of season practice violations" during the summer. When shown his stats after the game, senior quarterback Chad Perry commented, "The only stat I'm worried about is that one on the board." Perry was referring to the final score, written on the white board in the team locker room. |
2018 Playoffs | PC 17, GW Danville 14 | at Averett University, Pulaski County took an early 10-0 lead in the game, but the Eagles came by to lead 14-10 later in the game. Jakari Finley scored a touchdown with just over eight minutes left to play. Ryan Castle hit the PAT to give Pulaski County the 17-14 lead. A late pass attempt by the Eagles was knocked away by EJ Horton to seal the win for the Cougars. This was the first playoff win for the Cougars in eight years. |
Special thanks to Joel Hicks, Dan Callahan, Timmy Hurst, Craig Harris, Scott Shaffer, Steve Marcus and Ken Blevins for compiling and providing team and individual statistics throughout the years.
