The PCHS volleyball program traveled to Hillsville Tuesday for a matchup against the Carroll County Cavaliers. The end result was a win for the JV team in two sets and a loss for the varsity in three sets.

The junior varsity squad started things off with wins of 25-4 and 25-14. With that, the JV squad moves to 2-0 on the season.

Emma Sarver earned four aces, 14 points off services, and one block. Lylah Minnick recorded three kills, three assists, four aces, nine points from serving, and three digs. Gracie Sarver earned 13 assists and five digs. Ellie MacDonald had three kills, one assist, three aces, 10 points from service and two digs. Maia Lawrence recorded two kills, two aces, and eight points off service. Kyrsten Keith had three kills, seven assists, two aces, and five points from serving.

“Our JV squad had a very solid game against an always tough Cavalier team,” JV Head Coach Duane Minnick said. “The girls really came together and played as a team tonight. They came out of the gate swinging and ready to play hard. They had great communication on the court and executed with great gameplay. When the Cavaliers started to come back, our girls shut them down quickly and took back control of the game. I am super proud of our JV squad and excited for what’s to come this season.”

The varsity squad had a tougher night, falling in three straight sets by the scores of 9-25, 7-25, and 16-25. The loss drops the varsity squad to 1-1 on the season.

Makenna Yates recorded 15 assists and 11 digs. Bethany Lester had five digs. Leah Keefer earned four blocks. Hannah Keefer recorded five kills, three blocks, 13 assists, and three digs. Josey Smythers had two blocks and two digs. Madison Williams earned two blocks and six assists. Madolyn Legg had two kills and four blocks.

“It was a tough match tonight against Carroll County,” Head Coach Kylee Conner said. “They’re a good team and played well, we just couldn’t match their intensity until the third game. If we had played the way we did in the third game in the first and second games, I think it would’ve been a different match. A player highlight of the match tonight was MaKenna stepping up when we needed her to and having some awesome digs against a tough Carroll County offensive lineup.”

The Lady Cougars will now prepare to host the Giles Spartans Thursday, August 24. JV action will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed approximately 20 minutes later by the varsity contest.
