The Pulaski County Middle School Cougar football team ran into a buzzsaw Thursday in Roanoke, falling to the William Fleming Colonels by a final score of 48-0.
The game was a mix of big plays and tough runs for the Colonels. They opened the scoring with a 75-yard kickoff return and two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 7:45 remaining in the opening quarter. Three minutes later, they completed a 45-yard pass for the second score of the night. Another two-point conversion put them up 16-0. A 44-yard touchdown run finished off the scoring in the first quarter. The two-pointer left the Cougars down 24-0.
Fleming scored twice in the second quarter. The first came on a 19-yard pass with 4:39 remaining. The second was a three-yard run with just one second left in the first half. Successful two-point conversions sent the teams into the halftime break with William Fleming leading 40-0.
The Colonels added an insurance score in the third quarter with a 34-yard run and conversion, leaving the final score at 48-0.
Caleb Cregger earned 32 yards on eight carries for the Cougars. JD Grubb ran six times for 28 yards. Boone Blevins ran three times for a loss of 4 yards. Brock Schneider ran eight times for a loss of 27 yards.
The Cougars gained just 29 yards on 25 carries and competed two of six pass attempts for 48 yards. William Fleming ran 13 times for 121 yards and completed 11 of 14 pass attempts for 149 yards. The Cougars had six first downs compared to 11 by the Colonels. The Cougars gained 77 total yards of offense. William Fleming had 270 total yards.
The loss drops PCMS to 5-2 on the season. They’ll be back in action Thursday, Oct. 13, when they host Andrew Lewis at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium/Joel Hicks Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
