Pulaski County Public Schools has plenty of programs aimed at offering students and parents opportunities, and one of those is the School Nutrition Program.

Many may not realize that in Pulaski County all students are eligible for free meals, and these meals are geared towards feeding students a healthy and appetizing meal.

“We always offer two options for lunch at our elementary schools, and we offer a total of four options at the high school and three at the middle school,” PCPS Director of School Nutrition Mrs. Jessica Morrison said. “We also sell a variety of snacks that meet healthy snack requirements, and we always offer a variety of flavored and unflavored milk with each meal.”

Every Pulaski County student may receive breakfast at no cost each day, along with a lunch – also at no cost.  For schools with regularly scheduled academic activities after school, a snack is also available.

As of Tuesday, August 29, the program has served over 21,561 breakfast meals and 35,483 lunch meals to Pulaski County students. The school nutrition program strives to serve more students every day.

“We are a self-sustaining program,” Mrs. Morrison said. “The more students we have participating in our meals, the more options we can provide. We’re particularly proud of our Farm-to-Table program that has recently brought locally sourced beef into our schools, providing our students with yet another healthy meal option while also supporting local businesses. Programs like this are a win for everyone.”

While all of the school nutrition workers enjoy working with the students, sometimes they have special activities or events to encourage healthy eating. When students returned to school at Snowville Elementary School this year, they received bananas with special messages on them. The idea was a big hit with students and staff members.
