VSBA Video Contest

Students from the PCHS Video Production Class, led by Mr. Tyler Lundy, recently accepted the challenge of producing a short video promo to enter into a statewide contest, hosted by the Virginia School Board Association. The results, as you will see in the embedded video, were better than anyone could have imagined.

“I am very proud of my students and the effort that they put in to represent our school system in this competition,” Mr. Lundy said. “There is no question that Cougar Pride is a huge motivator in their video. I can’t wait to hear the results.”

The 2023 VSBA High School Student Video Contest is an annual event that offers students from around the Commonwealth the chance to show their skills in many areas of video production. Now in the 12th year, the competition challenges students to create a 30-second video that goes along with the theme of that particular year. This year, the theme is “We Are Better United Than Divided.” The top three videos, along with those identified by the judges as honorable mentions, will be posted on the VSBA’s YouTube site, and winners will be honored at the VSBA Annual Convention in November.

The video was created by, directed by, and produced by Pulaski County High School students from the class. Students invited Mr. Rob Graham, Superintendent of Pulaski County Public Schools, to narrate the video as a way of introducing him to what they have to offer.

Students gathered with Mr. Graham to brainstorm, creating a script and storyline for the initial plan. The students worked with Mr. Lundy and Mr. Graham to refine the script Graham was to read, and then moved it to the teleprompter for Graham to read as the students recorded his voice over portion of the video in their studio.

Students were then tasked with getting video clips at various school events to use in the video. They worked at the Homecoming Parage, Homecoming Pep Rally, PCHS Go event, Homecoming football game, and other locations around the school recording various segments.

With all of their needed content in hand, the students then went into production work. The video moved along quickly, but went through several edits before the final product was sent in. That video was submitted this week for consideration.

"I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Mr. Lundy and his students as we completed this project for the VSBA competition,” Mr. Graham said. “I was amazed at how talented and skilled the students were as well as the meaningful interactions they had with each other, Mr. Lundy and me. It was a wonderful team effort and I am grateful they included me in the project."
